I made a custom guitar using three different kinds of pickups. I have a humbucker in the bridge, an old fender strat pickup in the middle and a gibson p-90 in the neck. When I use a five way switch the 2 & 4 positions are out of phase and sound real thin. How can I make them in phase?

You are electrically out of phase, not magnetically, but you can reverse the magnets in the neck and bridge pickups to correct this. The Stratocaster pickup is wound (top left/top going) and the humbucker and P-90 coils are wound (top left/top coming). The P-90 and Humbucker are out of phase with the Stratocaster. You could…

I have a pickup that’s sealed and I like the sound by itself but it is out of phase when I use it with another pickup. What can easily be done to make it in phase?

There are several things that can be done if you can’t reverse the wires on the encased pickup (epoxied). If the other pickup being used is a humbucker check to see if it’s sealed or not. If it’s not sealed see if the magnet can be removed and flipped over 180 degrees. You may need…

The pole pieces on my bridge fender jaguar pickup buzz if I touch it and also out of phase when I use it with the neck pickup. When I check the wires the black hookup wire is grounded like it should be. What can be done?

It sounds like the white or hot wire is connected to the beginning of the coil and the black wire is hooked to the finish of the coil. This can make your pickup electrically out of phase instead of magnetically out of phase. By carefully reversing the two wires at the pickup will make the…

I added a second pickup to my gibson melody maker guitar and when using both pickups together they sound thin. Are they out of phase? Ron dawson-glasgow, scotland

When adding an extra pickup in your guitar two things can happen. The coils can be electrically out of phase or magnetically out of phase. In either case there are a few things you can do to remedy the problem. You can carefully remove the bar magnet in your existing Melody Maker pickup and flip…

What is electrical phasing?

Is determined by the winding direction of a pickup either Top Coming or Top Going and how one or more coils are hooked up electrically. By reversing the beginning and finish wires in a coil will reverse the electrical phasing. By reversing the magnetic polarity of a magnet is called magnetic phasing. If two pickups…

Why did some old fender telecasters have an out of phase sound when the switch was held in between the #1 and #2 position of the 3-way switch?

All the old Telecaster lead and rhythm pickups I’ve seen have been wound top left, top coming in other words the coil was wound counter-clockwise around the bobbin. When measuring the magnet polarity at the top of the lead and rhythm pickup, I have seen them both South or North. Eventually they both became standard…

Why are pickups in or out of phase with each other?

Pickups are usually out of phase with each other because they are electrically (winding direction) or magnetically (magnetic polarity) opposite each other or out of phase when used with each other. Here are four examples of phasing. If two coils are wound in the same direction and the same polarity-In Phase If two coils are…

All three of my stratocaster pickups have the same (south) polarity towards the strings but my neck and middle pickup sound real thin when my lever switch is the # 4 position. What can I do?

If the bridge and middle pickups sound fine in the # 2 position, it sounds like the neck pickup is wound in the opposite direction compared to the bridge and middle pickup. Normal vintage style Stratocaster pickups are wound top left (TL) and wound top going (TG). It seems that the neck pickup may be…

I have a gibson humbucker in the bridge position and it’s out of phase with my great sounding middle strat pickup and the strat pickup is out of phase with my neck p-90 pickup. How can I get everything in phase?

If you reverse the wires on the middle Strat pickup, the poles would become hot. If the grounded guitar strings would hit the poles, the signal could cut out and also the poles would buzz if you touch them. If you remagnetize the Strat pickup to be magnetically in phase you can change the magnetic…

What is parallel-out of phase?

Two bobbins that have opposite magnetic polarities and both coils are wound in the same direction. Both beginnings of each coil are connected to ground and the finish of both coils are positive. Two bobbins that have the same magnetic polarity and both coils are wound in an opposite direction. Both beginnings of each coil…
